Yoga is a holistic approach to managing the hard things.
It's a great toolkit for managing anxiety, trauma, burnout as well as the physical side effects of cancer or for recovery after big life changes or sporting events.
Yoga with Suni can help with managing fatigue and tiredness, anxiety, peripheral neuropathy (tingling and numbness), movement restriction from scar tissue, pain, sickness, low moods and conditions like lymphedema.
Whether you are managing having had cancer a while ago or currently in treatment, this yoga class focuses on making you feel more grounded and comfortable in your changing or changed body, through the use of asanas (postures) that safely stretch, strengthen, and relax the body.
Similarly for recovery classes, they are planned to create mobility, strength, stretch and connect you through breath and movement.
A smaller class size of maximum 15 people, ensures plenty of personal attention and guidance on suitable variations. The class is also open to those caring for a family member or a friend.
You need to be reasonably mobile and move independently. Have all surgical incisions healed and feel that your needs can be addressed in a group setting.
One to one sessions can be organised if you don't meet the above criteria - Please email me for a chat to see if I can help.
Speak with your healthcare team beforehand however, usually you are encouraged to move a small amount and the physiotherapy team may have exercises they recommend you do.
After treatment, mobility is key but start slow and if there is any short sharp pain then stop.
Here are some guidelines from the Macmillan’s website:
-
Start slowly and gradually build up the activity you do.
-
Do not exercise if you feel unwell or if you have any symptoms that worry you.
-
If you have bone problems, you should avoid uneven surfaces and activities that increase the risk of falling. You should also avoid high-impact activities, such as running.
-
Wear comfortable trainers or walking shoes.
-
Drink plenty of water, so you do not get dehydrated.
-
Protect yourself in the sun.
-
Have a healthy snack after exercising, such as a banana.
-
As long as you are able to get to class, Yoga with Suni will be meeting you where you are with your body. For example, we can use chairs, the wall, yoga blocks, straps, blankets, anything we can get our hands on to make things easier!
You need to be reasonably mobile and move independently. Have all surgical incisions healed and feel that your needs can be addressed in a group setting.
We will make options, alternatives and use props to help protect parts of your body. For example; if you have bone metastasis (mets), then we will be careful about spinal twists or pelvis tilts or other longer bone structural postures.
Remember you move about in daily life, many times automatically. Yoga is about how to move mindfully depending on what is going on for your body on that day. Most of all, you know your body better than I do and encourage you to choose what’s best. So maybe a different asana (posture) or to rest.
One to one sessions can be organised if you don't meet the above criteria. Please email me to have a chat and see if I can help.
Please refer to: How soon can I come to yoga post-surgery/treatment.
Not at all! We all have different anatomy structures, injuries, scars, treatment etc. No prior experience of yoga is needed beforehand. Yoga with Suni is a non-judgemental space for restorative yoga which is; breathwork, working on being present, mobility and building strength.
The forms you complete are confidentially kept digitally and only accessed by Yoga with Suni.
The side effects will be talked about in class as a general for all, sometimes I may mention something particular to you but is done in a respectful way. It isn’t about shaming or embarrassing you, but if you would prefer me not to mention anything then please let me know before the class begins.
If you have signed up to one to one yoga, everything you say is kept confidential, unless you talk about harming yourself or someone else. I may need to contact someone for safeguarding in the event of this risk, but I will speak with you about it first.
Maximum 15 people per class with plenty of space between mats.
Bring along a mat. Additional props are helpful such as; blocks and a blanket. But don’t worry if you haven’t got the additional props as they will be provided. If you’d prefer to use your own blanket, then please bring it along.
Wear comfy clothes that allow you to move freely. Socks, a jumper or something warm to wear as it can get chilly during relaxation.
Bring your compression garment along for help with lymphoedema management or any additional equipment you need based on treatment/injury/scarring.The room is well spaced out and has ventilation being mindful of the weakened immune system that treatment has caused. Check out the venue here.
